GREELEY,
Colo. - After splitting the first four games of its
grueling,
three-week road trip, the WESTCO Zephyrs senior legion
baseball team
dropped both games of a doubleheader at the Greeley
GoJos on Thursday in Greeley, Colo.
WESTCO
lost the first game by a score of 10-3 before dropping an 8-0
setback in game
two.
"They
were a very good team," Zephyrs coach Mark Moran said of
Greeley.
"Their lineup was really good and they threw four or five
really good
pitchers at us."
Greeley
featured a pair of players who were selected in the Major
League Baseball Draft on Thursday.
One went to the Colorado Rockies,
while another was selected
by the Atlanta Braves.
In
the first game, the Zephyrs trailed just 2-1 through three
innings. However,
Greeley scored two runs in the fourth before
scoring three
runs each in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The
Zephyrs added a pair of runs to their total in the sixth.
Michael
Hoppes took the loss on the mound. He struck out five
and
allowed five hits
in five innings of work. Josh Marcelain pitched the
final inning.
"I
thought Hoppes pitched well," Moran said.
"We misplayed a few
balls behind him or that
game could have been closer."
Offensively,
Hoppes and Zac Rada both collected two hits. Nate
Goodwin
drove in two runs and Trevor Papczun had a double.
The
Zephyrs were limited to just one hit in game two. Jackson
Pahlke's
second-inning single was the only offensive highlight.
Greeley
pounded out 10 hits.
Garrett
Deeds took the loss on the mound for the Zephyrs. Deeds
allowed eight
hits in four innings of work. Joe Huck allowed two hits
in one inning.
"In
the second game they threw some real power guys at us," Moran
said. "One guy was
throwing in the 90s and another guy was throwing
in the mid 80s. They
were a couple of big time pitchers."
The
Zephyrs, now 5-11 on the season, will return to action on
Saturday at Wheatland, Wyo.
The first game of the doubleheader is
scheduled to start
at 2 p.m.
Moran
said Chase Wickard and Papczun
are scheduled to get the starts
on the mound.
